From mild to extreme; I have listed horror movies of every genre possible for you to binge-watch this Halloween!
It is said that the barrier between the spiritual realm and the physical realm becomes its thinnest during this month. Viewing horror movies kinda shakes up our energy levels. We become more in tune with the subtle presence of the ‘other world’. It scares us and yet also gives us a ‘high’, that is why some people are addicted to it and some avoid it like the plague. Therefore, for Halloween 2019, I have put together a list of horror movies of every genre for you to binge watch!
I myself have watched 95% of the content listed below so you can trust me not to put any cheap thrills in there. Happy reading!
1. GENRE: BOLLYWOOD HORROR
Yes! We are starting from home. These movies gave a standard for other Bollywood movies to stand up to. I would watch them at any given time of the year, no doubt.
I. RAAZ (2002)
This movie sent me down to the rabbit hole of the horror genre. This movie started it all. An honor to start my article with this movie.
The story is strong, the acting is phenomenal, the sound effects, background score, songs – this movie has got it all.
II. DARNA MANA HAI (2003)
PLOT SUMMARY: When their car breaks down, six out of seven friends take shelter in a seemingly abandoned hut in the middle of a forest and share supernatural stories.
An anthology horror drama film, Darna Mana Hai WILL creep the crap outta you! There are 6 stories told and each one of them will stay with you long after you watched them.
You can watch the full movie on YouTube.
III. 1920 (2008)
This movie is more than a typical horror. This one has heart. It makes you question things and re-affirms your faith on your Higher Power . The climax gave me literal goosebumps on my first viewing.
You can watch the full movie on YouTube.
2. GENRE: CLASSIC HORROR
They are called all time favorites for a reason. Here are the golds for you –
I. THE OMEN (1976)
One of the classics – Robert Thorn switches his wife’s stillborn baby with an orphaned infant who they later name ‘Damian.’ As Damian grows, a series of sinister events start to take place ultimately revealing him to be the Anti-Christ. A gripping story of loss, betrayal and pure horror!

II. POLTERGEIST (1982)
Steven and Diane Freeling’s lives are uprooted when seemingly friendly spirits turn malevolent and abduct their daughter, Carol Anne. The spirits communicates with the youngest Freeling through a TV set and soon transition into the physical realm.
Meanwhile, there were a lot of bizarre events which happened during and after the filming of the set too.
III. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE (2005)
Based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ is as much a horror than it is a crime drama. This movie has spine-chilling moments, incredible acting and enigma. You just HAVE to watch the climax scene where Emily Rose’s letter is read which she wrote days before her death!!
This movie made me realize that there are supernatural forces which govern our lives and how tightly we are bounded by them.
3. GENRE: FOUND FOOTAGE
Make sure you are in a quiet environment because movies of this genre demands on your unwavering attention. Preferably watch them alone or with company who is as equally enthusiastic about the movie as you.
I. AS ABOVE SO BELOW (2014)
MY FAVORITE MOVIE. EVER. I have never seen a movie like this! It’s chaotic, mad, bone-chilling and just AWESOME!
Archaeologist Scarlett Marlowe leads a group of individuals on a search for Nicholas Flamel’s Philosopher Stone in the catacombs of Paris. This infamous stone has alchemical properties i.e. it can turn any metal into gold and can essentially make its holder, immortal. The group goes down into the forbidden areas of the catacombs and enter Hell, literal Hell.
II. UNFRIENDED (2014)
I absolutely love this one! Six friends are video chatting on what seems to be a regular school night when they receive a message from their deceased friend, Laura Barns. Laura Barns had committed suicide after being cyber-bullied relentlessly. A series of events force this group of friends to let out all the secrets in the open, once and for all.
III. GONJIAM: HAUNTED ASYLUM (2018)
Gonjiam is counted in 10 of the freakiest places around the world. This movie takes its time to build up but when it does…you just have to see it for yourself. The expressions on the actors faces, the sound of their rasping breaths, every creak is chilling!
A group of individuals live-stream their trespassing into Gonjiam, a haunted asylum in South Korea. What turns out to be a fun trip ends in horrible deaths as each member of the team is picked out separately by the forces of Gonjiam.
4. GENRE: PURE HORROR
Some of the biggest horror movies comes under this genre. Jump scares, unforeseen plot twists are what rules these movies. They earn the big bucks and are known globally. Just because they are mainstream doesn’t mean they don’t know their stuff.
I. HEREDITARY (2018)
This movie. What to say?! This movie brings the metaphors to life, it shows how grief can personify itself into your greatest nightmares and haunt the living daylights out of you. The story-line is intense, gripping and haunting. A must watch for horror buffs!
II. INSIDIOUS/THE CONJURING SERIES
Dalton, son of Josh and Renai Lambert, mysteriously slips into coma soon after they relocate to a new house. It is soon discovered that Dalton, capable of Astral Projection, has stumbled upon The Further and is being kept hostage by the Devil himself, by looks of him.
This movie is the mother of jump scares and sudden scene jumps! The movie’s worth it, though.
There is nothing to say about this movie. It is the mother of all mainstream horror movies. Based on true case study of the Warrens, The Conjuring is one of the best horror movies of all time, hands down!
III. THE BABADOOK (2014)
This comes under the same lines of Hereditary. The Babadook is a tale of a mother and a son who fight through their griefs and eventually learn that the trick with emotions is to simply accept them as your children too.
This movie teaches us to give importance to our emotions, however monstrous they may be. Watch this movie for its sub-text, themes and layers.
5. GENRE: GORE-HORROR
For those with iron stomachs! Here are some good gore horrors for you –
I. WRONG TURN PART 2
A group of reality show contestants are forced to fight for their lives when they hunted down by a horde of deformed beings. Due to generations of in-breeding, these beings are not counted as humans per se. They are cannibalistic, violent and driven by pure instinct.
Watch this series only if you are fan of pure gore. The story-line might not be so engaging.
II. SAW 1 & 2
Saw is one of the goriest movies out there. It is sadistic, violent and pure genius. You have to give credit to the cast and crew of the Saw movie franchise for bringing an obscure movie genre to mainstream.
Better start with part 1 and 2 first. Since all the movies are connected with one another, it will make more sense to catch it from the beginning for the story arc, not the gore level.
III. THE EVIL DEAD (2013)
When I watched this one, I was awestruck! The level of detail – visuals, audio, acting, cinematography was pure delight to watch. It is gory as f**k so watch it on your risk.
6. GENRE: CREATURE HORROR
No ghosts, demons or anything. You can see the evil, hear them aloud and kill them too. But that don’t make it any less horrifying to look at. Listed below are my favourite movies of all time. Check ’em out.
I. ALIEN ANTHOLOGY
The thing about the ALIEN ANTHOLOGY is that it is more of a sci-fi than a horror. The whole story-arc of this franchise is based on science, not supernatural phenomena. There is Artificial Intelligence, interstellar travel, advanced species and so much more.
Since there are around 8 movies in this franchise and all of them intricately connected in the same universe, you need a perfect order to watch them.
II. PREDATOR 1 & 2
Just watch the first two and that will be enough, in my humble opinion. Both Predator and Predator 2 exist within the same cinematic universe and involve some heavy duty action.
There is graphic violence and strong language involved but dammit, these two are worth it all!
III. SIGNS (2002)
One of my all time favorites! This movie makes us question things; things like co-incidence, fate, faith and destiny. One of the best scenes in the movie is the conversation between characters of Joaquin Phoenix and Mel Gibson about whether we are alone in this world or not. This scene is known as ‘miracles or co-incidences scene.’ Check it out –
7. GENRE: SCI-FI HORROR
For the horror buff and the nerd in you. These movies will make you wonder about the possibilities which humanity could face in the future.
I. EVENT HORIZON (1997)
It is the year 2047 and a team of astronauts is sent to investigate a lost spacecraft which mysteriously reappears after it disappeared in its maiden voyage 7 years ago. The story is gripping, the visuals are terrifying and the story-line is competent.
II. EX-MACHINA (2014)
Ex machina is Greek for ‘from a machine.’ It is usually prefixed with ‘DEUS’ making it – Deus Ex Machina literally meaning ‘a god from a machine.’
A programmer partakes in a scientific experiment where he has to interact with Ava, a top of the line Artificial Intelligence robot. Watch this movie when you are relaxed and willing to use your mind while getting entertained.
III. GET OUT (2017)
While the primary genre of this movie is Pure Horror, it also comes under sci-fi equally owing to its plot line. The movie is about a mixed race couple Chris and Rose. A soft spoken, African-American Chris accompanies her Caucasian girlfriend Rose to her parent’s house. As Chris spends some time with Rose’s family and friends, things begin to get weird in all manners of sense.
This movie is creepy as hell and has some of the greatest scary scenes inside it. Give it a watch for slow and rich quality horror.
8. GENRE: TV SERIES
I. THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (2018-present)
This series is based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name and is directed by Mike Flanagan (check out our article on his latest movie ‘Doctor Sleep‘).
“I don’t usually care for this kind of revisionism, but this [Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House] is great. Close to a work of genius, really. I think Shirley Jackson would approve, but who knows for sure”
~ Stephen King in a tweet.
II. AMERICAN HORROR STORY (2011- present)
To be honest, I haven’t gotten around to watch it yet but I have heard great acclaims for this anthology. Every season has its own separate story-line and different set of characters. Give it a watch and let me know how it is, yeah?
III. FRINGE (2008-2013)
If you loved The X-files then you will absolutely LOVE Fringe! I have watched this series multiple times now and I can say it with confidence and authority – WATCH THIS PRONTO!
Parallel universes, super-humans, metamorphism, alternate realities, time-travelling, astral projection – you name it – Fringe has got it. This series will blow your socks off if you let it. A must must watch!
9. GENRE: WTF DID I JUST WATCH?
These movies require multiple viewings in order to make complete sense. The first viewing will leave you scratching your head and asking yourself, ‘wtf did I just watch?’
I. GOODNIGHT MOMMY (2014)
This movie is just….creepy, man. Two brothers become suspicious of their mother’s identity when she returns from a facial reconstructive surgery. Her face remains bandaged for the length of the movie; that coupled with her strange demeanor leads the boys to take drastic measures to get to the truth.
You need to watch this. Let me know how it goes 😉
II. THE ENDLESS (2017)
Two brothers receive a video cassette from Camp Arcadia, a commune of people who haven’t aged a day in 10 years. Being a part of the camp as youths, they escaped claiming it was a UFO death cult. As they head back towards the camp after 10 years, they realize that the Camps’ beliefs were not all crazy after all.
A must watch if you dig mystery and time-loop stories.
III. SHUTTER ISLAND (2010)
Based on the Dennis Lahane’s 2003 novel of the same name, the movie is set in the year 1954; Detective Teddy Daniels (Leo DiCaprio) with his new partner Chuck (Mark Ruffalo) sets out towards Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island. An inmate has escaped the heavily guarded prison and now it is up to Teddy and Chuck to resolve the mystery.
The movie is directed by Martin Scorsese and casts one of the methodical actors of all time. A must watch!
