THE THREE TYPES OF MIND

There are basically three types of mind, they are –

  • Conscious Mind
  • Sub-conscious Mind
  • Super Conscious Mind

WHAT IS CONSCIOUS MIND?

Conscious mind is just like the pilot of an airplane. Just like the pilot steers the airplane, our conscious mind steers our body and actions in daily life. Our conscious mind is what we use to interact with people and learn new information.

(The pilot is your conscious mind. The steering control is your body – the plane goes wherever ‘The Pilot’ wills it to go.)

AN INSTANCE OF CONSCIOUS MIND AT WORK

Firstly, the conscious mind receives the signals from our 5 basic senses i.e. touch, sight, taste, smell and hearing as we experience life on a daily basis. The signals received from these senses travel to our mind where it is processed by our sub-conscious mind. The output signals travel back our conscious mind and we take the appropriate action.

All this process happens within micro-seconds!

Let’s take an example – say you are in a restaurant; your order has arrived and the food is piping hot! You are really hungry and want to dig in immediately but you wait for the food to cool down a bit before you put it in your mouth. How come you decided that you need to wait for the food to cool down?

(Because you might end up looking like this? Haha!)

Step 1: As soon as you saw the hot food, your sense of sight sent signals to your brain telling it that the food is hot.

Step 2: The information about the hot food that you have seen goes immediately to your subconscious mind. The information is now compared with all of your previous experiences with hot food and recalls what happens to your body in case of eating that food i.e. blistering of the mouth, etc.

Step 3: If the food is hot to your sense of touch, your sub-conscious mind will tell you that it is not safe to eat it. Your conscious mind then takes the action accordingly.

(Blowing on hot food – an action taken by the conscious mind triggered by our sub-conscious.)

WHAT IS SUB – CONSCIOUS MIND?

The sub-conscious mind is responsible for everything which keeps us alive. Our breathing, our body temperature, every time we blink, our digestive system, our dreams…. The subconscious mind is like the Director of a movie. It stays behind the camera but is in charge of every little detail of the film and is responsible for 95% of our actions.

(Your body is a work of art and the subconscious mind is its creator.)

HOW TO USE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND CONSCIOUSLY?

Your sub-conscious mind is like a memory card with unlimited storage space. Every little detail of your life can be recalled in perfect detail even if it happened 20 years ago! But our conscious mind keeps on filtering this information and only retains that info which is useful to us in the short-term.

The conscious mind is for short-term memory and the subconscious mind is for long-term memory. In order to get the information transferred from conscious to sub-conscious – repetition of the information is required.  Now do you understand why your teachers keep telling you to revise your lessons every day?

EXAMPLES FOR GREATER CLARITY

  1. During exam time, why do you think you keep revising your lessons again and again? It is so because you need to transfer that information from short-term memory into long-term so that you recall your answers perfectly when you are in the exam hall.

Whatever you keep repeating inside your head is what you will eventually carry with you for a very long time. So, the more you revise your lessons – the longer they will stay inside your head!

2. Remember when you were trying to learn how to ride a bicycle? How did you learn it? In one day? NO. You had to drive again and again, fall a couple of times – get back up and try again. You kept on repeating it until you could cycle without any worries. Now, it is a muscle memory. Even if you haven’t ridden a bike in years – you never forget it because it is now stored in your subconscious mind!

There are even quotes where we say, ‘It is as easy as riding a cycle!’ Your subconscious mind is the most powerful tool at your disposal and all you need to hone it is repetition.

HOW TO USE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND FOR OUR BENEFIT?

Now that you know that repetition is the key to success – you can use it to reprogram your entire brain structure and the way you think.

  • This is why repeating positive affirmations are so impactful. Make a list of your top 10 or top 20 positive affirmations.

  • The constant repetition of uplifting words will eventually alter your way of thinking. Where other people will be tensed or will suffer anxiety, you will notice that your body is calm and mind is collected even during the most trying times.
  • Think of your sub-conscious mind as the garden and the conscious mind as the gardener – whatever you will decide to sow is what you will reap. Sow positive thoughts, reap positive results!

WHAT IS SUPER CONSCIOUS MIND?

Super conscious mind is the best of both worlds. It is when you have a deep understanding of your conscious and subconscious mind; you are aware of your thought process and in which direction it is heading.

(The superconscious mind blankets both conscious & subconscious minds under it. It is called by many names, the most famous name being – God.)

HOW TO HARNESS THE POWER OF SUPER CONSCIOUS MIND?

The power of the super-conscious is harnessed by the sub-conscious mind. To use this power, first we will have to fine-tune our conscious minds. This can be done through:

A) Meditation

Kids as young as 5 years old can benefit from meditation for the rest of their lives given that it is carried out regularly. Mainly meditation at that age is carried out to instil 5 core qualities within the kid i.e.

  • Calmness
  • Focus
  • Kindness
  • Forgiveness
  • Gratitude

The goal is to get the kid to become a wholesome person who accepts his/her own flaws, love themselves regardless of other opinions, knows how to be tolerant, forgiving and unfailingly kind towards other living beings.

There are a lot of meditation practices custom-made for kids starting as early as 5 years. You can add a little more detail and fun to the exercise to keep them engaged. Young kids, especially under the age of 6, love the extra movement when they’re learning to bring awareness to their breath.

You can visit this link for guided meditation techniques made specifically for kids.

b) Yoga

Benefits of yoga are known world-wide. If the child is doing yoga as a part of his/her daily routine from a young age then he/she can be expected to grow up with a fit body, calm mind and a gentle spirit. They develop an intimate relationship with the natural world which surrounds them and when coupled with meditation; the children learn to guide themselves with their intuition rather than peer pressure or social media.

Start out with Surya namaskar and Pranayam and then gradually introduce them to other poses and breathing techniques.
